Issues in handling staged construction analysis for suspension bridges

Suspension bridges are widely used as engineering structures to across long spans and give rise to the usage of domains under the bridge. Suspension bridges are significant engineering structure due to the high costs and logistical importance. Therefore, the analysis of suspension bridges must be done on the best possible analytical model since structural elements such as the deck, towers, and cables show different structural behavior.
Construction stage analysis is performed to check the structural stability and to calculate section forces during erection. In carrying out the construction stage analysis, large displacement theory (nonlinear geometric theory) is applied in which equilibrium equations are formulated to represent the deformed shape. The effect of large displacements cannot be ignored during the construction stage analysis. The construction stage analysis is performed in a backward sequence from the state of equilibrium as defined by the initial equilibrium state analysis.

Process and features helpful for checking constructability of Suspension Bridges

Significant Features and Differences in Results

  1. Suspension Bridge Wizard- performs an initial configuration analysis only considering the cable system. To accomplish an initial configuration analysis examining the global system of a bridge, re-analysis using this function is needed.
  2. Backward Construction Stage Analysis
    • Accurate analysis with initial member forces to reflect the behavior of a self anchored suspension bridge subjected to axial forces in girders
    • Typical construction methods applicable for self anchored suspension bridges such as hanger insertion and jack-down construction methods.

Midas Civil program was used to investigate the lateral response of the structure to investigate pier deflections, modular joint movement, and lateral reactions at abutments. The Initial model was developed using steel composite girder bridge wizard. Midas also has capability for you can define deck pouring sequence and how much you want to pour at positive moment region first, and negative moment region later. It was nice capability. I also want to point out that midas Civil also has composite section properties that considering warping effect, when you select the option, you will get a better representation of the warping stiffness of the system.
